Your cholesterol levels provide useful information about your overall health. When these levels aren’t in the right range, the patient can develop serious problems, such as blockages in arteries. Karen S. Steed, RN, FNP, CFMP, of Innovative Healthcare Family Practice offers advanced cholesterol management services to patients in and around North Texas, including Sherman, Texas and McKinney, Texas. Ms. Steed is accepting patients from Frisco and Van Alstyne, Texas too. To make an appointment to have your cholesterol levels tested, or for cholesterol management services, call or book online today.
Cholesterol is a waxy substance found within every cell in your body. Your body needs a certain amount of cholesterol to make vitamin D, hormones, and other important substances. Although your liver is capable of producing all the cholesterol you need, you also take in additional cholesterol from the foods you eat.
Once it’s in the body, cholesterol travels through your bloodstream on lipoproteins, which are structures made of protein on the outside and fat on the inside. Genetic factors along with lifestyle determines how cholesterol affects you.
Depending on what your insurance will cover, Karen will order the appropriate advanced diagnostic cholesterol test, which may include genetic testing. Results from that will guide her in the need for pharmaceuticals, supplementation, lifestyle measures, or a combo. Regardless of the situation, she customizes every patient’s treatment plan to meet their individual needs. Certain patients will also be referred to a cardiologist if necessary.
High cholesterol often causes no signs or symptoms. The American Heart Association recommends you start checking your cholesterol at age 20, then having regular tests every 4-6 years. If you have certain risk factors, like diabetes or tobacco use, you may need to be checked more frequently. Talk to Karen if you’re concerned about your cholesterol levels and would like to schedule a blood test.
