Irritable Bowel with Diarrhea

Do You Have Irritable Bowel with Diarrhea?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is very common, accounting for over 3 million office visits per year in the U.S. The frustrating thing is, there’s nothing wrong with your colon, so when you have a colonoscopy, the doctor says, “Everything’s fine, you just have IBS.” But everything’s not fine when you have cramping, pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and sometimes constipation.

We may have an answer for you – SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). You see, bacteria normally reside in the colon or large intestine, but it’s kind of rare for there to be colon-type bacteria in the small intestine. When there is, you are going to feel it. In addition to the symptoms above, there can be weight loss or weight gain, vitamin/mineral deficiencies, brain fog, unexplained fatigue, anxiety, and intolerance to certain carbs, fibers, and sweeteners.

We have a simple blood test called IBSSure that may reveal SIBO as the cause of your problems. While this test is not covered by insurance, these results reduce costs in the long run and prevent treatment delays. It can also help me monitor for SIBO recurrence in patients who have been diagnosed previously.

Steroids, anti-inflammatory medications, biologic agents, or other immunosuppressive drugs may skew results, so inform me before we test in case we need to have you set these meds aside for a while prior to testing.

What will I do if I find you have SIBO? We will talk about dietary interventions as well as supplements to kill off the abnormal bacteria and restore balance to your GI system. There may be other testing we do as well. One thing is for sure – you will get the personalized plan that is right for you.
