A Properly Functioning Immune System

A Properly Functioning Immune System

"Important for the current healthcare crisis and beyond"

At Innovative Healthcare & Wellness Center, we have always been champions of making your immune system the very best it can be.

As you might expect, we have seen a rise in calls from our patients asking for guidance on how they can support their body’s natural immune response.  Therefore, I’m using this blog to explain how we can support you before, during, and after you encounter a contagious disease-causing virus or bacteria.

It is much easier to prevent a disease rather than manage it once it has manifested. Our preference is to focus is on “preventive medicine” which means creating a plan to get in front of the problems.

We advocate Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Zinc, and probiotics that target the respiratory needs as they all enhance the immune system. When the respiratory tract is exposed to microbes, these supplements defend and support the lining, possibly warding off disease.

I’ve heard several patients say they felt like “something was coming on,” but an illness never materialized. Evidence suggests there are people who ward off infection better than others however we do not yet know how to specifically identify those people.   For those who prefer supplements as extra immune support, the following are examples of preventive supplements to have on board:

“I’m Sick”

What if, despite your best efforts, you get sick anyway?

The goals then are to decrease the ability of the microbe to multiply and to reduce your symptoms. Curcumin, Quercetin, PEA, and Green tea are shown to do just that.

It is important to note that patients with autoimmune disease do not necessarily present with classic or “textbook” symptoms.

The following are examples of supplements that have been shown to decrease microbe population and thereby reduce symptom severity.

Inflavonoid Intensive Care          Golden Fusion (Curcumin)         Sinuplex (Quercetin)

Hemp Advantage Plus (PEA)         Berberine GT (Green Tea)

The Cytokine Storm

I’m hearing more discussion mentioning events where some people are getting sicker and progressing to respiratory compromise and even death due to a cytokine storm, which is an overreaction of the immune system.

Drugs such as Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) may show promise as a tool to calm down the overreaction of the immune system, but carries with it at least 17 cautionary statements, including heart rhythm abnormalities. Genetic testing should be performed as a G6PD deficiency would be a contraindication to use Plaquenil.

The Future

When we get on the other side of this pandemic, I look forward to seeing us leverage our new knowledge and practicing several positive behavioral changes:

Lastly, I look forward to the COVID-19 antibody tests (when widely available) that will prove who really did or did not have the virus rather than depending on the testing which so far has shown many false positives and false negatives.

So, What to Do Now?

Be aware - Regardless of where you are in your health journey, you should be completely aware of your personal health challenges and how they affect your immune system.

Get current lab work that reveals your immune system’s condition - By employing advanced testing methods we investigate beyond the typical healthcare provider’s standard of care and reveal specific markers of immune dysfunction.

Make an appointment to get what I call the immune function panel.”  This data allows us to use the personalized therapies that make sense for you.

Take this time to improve your diet, increase your pure water intake, and engage in exercise. Re-connect with family, friends, and your spiritual needs, even if you do it through social media right now. Most churches are streaming live, and you can find great resources such as webinar-based bible studies and counseling. This is no time to neglect your mental health.
